Hindi Matra Chart and Practice (हिंदी मात्रा)
A मात्रा is the sign a स्वर takes when it joins a व्यंजन. For example, क + आ becomes का. Once children know the matras, they can read many more Hindi words.

Two things to point out to your child:
- ि is written before the letter but spoken after it (कि).
- With र, the signs ु and ू take a special shape: रु, रू.

Frequently asked questions
How many matras are there in Hindi?
There are 10 basic vowel matras: ा ि ी ु ू ृ े ै ो ौ. The signs अनुस्वार (ं), विसर्ग (ः) and चंद्रबिंदु (ँ) are also written with matras. The स्वर अ has no matra sign. TaraLearn's matra lessons cover ा ि ी ु ू े ै ो ौ.
What is the difference between छोटी इ and बड़ी ई matra?
छोटी इ (ि) is written before the letter but spoken after it: क + ि = कि. बड़ी ई (ी) is written after the letter: प + ी = पी. TaraLearn's day 40 practises both.
What is barakhadi?
बारहखड़ी is one consonant written with each matra in order, e.g., क का कि की कु कू के कै को कौ कं कः.

When should children learn matras?
Usually after they know the स्वर and व्यंजन. In TaraLearn, the matra lessons (days 39–41 and 43–44) come after the letter lessons (days 1–20).
